Position Description

The University of Guelph invites applications for nomination to the prestigious Canada Impact+ Research Chair in Fluid Phase Chemistry for Nuclear Energy. This opportunity will enable a world‑class researcher to establish and lead an ambitious research program in an area of chemical science relevant to the Canadian nuclear power industry, positioning Canada at the forefront of clean energy innovation.

Program Overview

Canada Impact+ Research Chairs are a one‑time initiative designed to attract world‑leading researchers whose work addresses critical national and global challenges. Chairs receive long‑term funding and institutional support to advance transformative projects in Canada’s strategic priority areas, build and maintain exceptional research teams, and collaborate with partners across sectors and borders.

Eligibility:
Applicants must be internationally based (working and residing outside Canada) at the time of the Final date to receive applications and must hold the rank of full professor or associate professor, or possess equivalent qualifications if recruited from outside the academic sector. A Ph.D. in Physical or Analytical Chemistry or a closely related discipline is required.

Responsibilities
  • Direct the research program and all related activities, leading a team of personnel.
  • Coordinate governance and administration with the host institution.
  • Build an independent, world‑class research program complementary to existing UNENE‑funded research at Guelph.
  • Translate research discoveries into applications, commercialization, and social and economic benefits.
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborations with academia, industry and government.
  • Demonstrate leadership and equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA) in mentorship and recruitment.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Physical or Analytical Chemistry or a closely related discipline; industrial or national laboratory experience is an asset.
  • International recognition for research excellence, innovation and leadership.
  • Record of outstanding publications, patents, licenses, datasets, technologies and external research funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large teams and foster collaborations.
  • Fluent in teaching Analytical or Physical Chemistry at undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Strong commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and access.
  • Commitment to Indigenous engagement if research involves indigenous communities.
Expertise Areas (Asset)
  • Quantitative studies of hydrothermal fluids or molten salts.
  • Thermochemical database development for current and future nuclear reactors.
  • Thermochemical modelling of fluids under extreme conditions.
  • Electrochemistry, corrosion, or radiation chemistry.
  • Computational chemistry relevant to reactor coolants and/or nuclear waste management.
Targeted Research Focus

Fluid Phase Chemistry for Nuclear Energy, with emphasis on physical chemistry research targeting reactor coolant fluids relevant to the current Canadian reactor fleet and/or Small Modular Reactors.

Funding and Duration

Annual award: $500,000. Term: 8 years, with possible 4‑year extension at 50% of original award value.

Application Process

The process consists of two stages:

  • Apply to an open faculty posting (Requisition ) on the University of Guelph career site by submitting a single merged PDF containing: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, brief description of proposed research program, career highlights, teaching philosophy, and names/email addresses of three references.
  • Successful candidate will be supported in developing a federal Impact+ Chair application. Appointment is contingent on receiving the Impact+ award.

Assessment of applications will begin on January 22, 2026. Candidate interviews will be held during the week of February 2nd–6th, 2026. Deadline for application:
January 22, 2026.
