Overview
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer at WSP, you will lead the design and execution of high‑impact building services projects across the UK and Europe. You will provide technical direction, manage multidisciplinary teams, and drive innovation in sustainable and digital construction.
Responsibilities- Lead the design and technical delivery of Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) services for landmark projects.
- Supervise detailed design work and manage the delivery of performance specifications.
- Act as the primary client point of contact, ensuring client deliverables and internal KPIs are met.
- Direct the feasibility study and overall project feasibility for new and existing commissions.
- Maintain project overview, resource planning and resourcing across associated projects.
- Conduct regular team meetings to discuss resourcing, staff issues, H&S, quality, training and development.
- Provide construction support during construction phases and oversight of technical issues.
- Deliver excellent client care and promote WSP’s capabilities in the region.
- Assist in developing client relationships and promote new commissions.
- Lead and direct junior staff and manage performance reviews.
- Provide technical direction and production of detailed and performance specifications.
- Hold the responsibility for resource allocation and project delivery across the discipline.
- Adopt WSP philosophies of sustainability, net zero carbon, digital design and modern methods of construction.
You will report to the Heathrow Director, Huso Yildirim and manage a team of graduate, senior and principal engineers in Guildford, Basingstoke, Southampton and Heathrow. The role offers a flexible hybrid working model with the possibility to work from home and from WSP’s modern UK offices.
Qualifications- Proven track record delivering large UK MEP projects with design proficiency in relevant UK standards, codes and regulations.
- Working knowledge of UK mechanical building services design, including latest mechanical design software packages.
- Experience and proficiency in Revit MEP or other 3D design software for allocation and direction of work.
- Ability to manage technical, cost and programme elements of project delivery.
- Strong technical judgment, resourcefulness and ability to represent WSP to clients.
- Security Check (SC) UK vetting required.
- Ability to work as part of a team and take a leading role in managing engineers towards key project delivery.
- Technical judgment and resourcefulness in feasibility studies, concept, scheme and detailed design.
- Understanding of client needs and delivery of client‑centric engineering solutions.
- Knowledge of latest mechanical design software packages for work allocation and direction.
- Management of technical, cost and programme elements throughout the project life cycle.
