Job Purpose

As we continue to expand our market share in the rapidly emerging Employee Experience platform category, we are looking for a Tech Lead. The Tech Lead is a key technical leadership role, responsible for guiding the team’s approaches to software development, making strategic decisions, and aligning project goals with the organisation’s technical vision. In this role, you will be a central figure in ensuring technical coherence, solving the most challenging issues, and mentoring engineers to reach their full potential.

Reporting to the team’s Engineering Manager, the Tech Lead helps to shape the technical strategies for delivering value as a team, acting as a strategic partner and a technical authority. At Unily this role does not involve line management of developers. This is a hybrid role with an expectation of 1 to 2 days per week in Eashing and occasional days at our London office.

You may be expected to be available on call during holiday periods – always by prior arrangement.

Main Responsibilities
  • Contribute directly to the development work undertaken by the team.
  • Help ensure successful team planning, review and retrospective events, helping guide technical solutions and ensuring planned work is feasible and in line with the product’s technical strategy.
  • Work with engineers in your team to provide technical guidance and navigate the technical challenges they face.
  • Ensure the team delivers high-quality, working software. You will work with your engineers to build both the software and the automated tests that validate it.
  • Mentor engineers on technical skills, career development, and best practices, supporting their growth into future technical leaders.
  • Support the software the team builds, through training, documentation, monitoring and assisting with incidents, bugs and questions about your domain.
  • Define technical direction and priorities for projects, ensuring alignment with broader architectural goals and standards.
  • Facilitate architectural discussions, setting standards for code quality, security, and performance within the team.
  • Tackle the team’s most complex technical challenges, creating robust, scalable solutions to advance product goals.
  • Collaborate with product managers, tech leads and other stakeholders to clarify requirements, manage trade‑offs, and align solutions with user problems.
  • Lead or support technical evaluations and feasibility studies, bringing insights from research and industry trends into the organisation.
  • Drive process improvements, advocating for tools, practices, or methodologies that improve team efficiency and product quality.
  • Identify technical debt and make strategic recommendations for refactoring and optimisation to support long-term product goals.
  • Ensure the team and product maintain high standards of compliance in areas such as privacy, security and process adherence.
Requirements
  • Excellent software development skills with a good understanding of software engineering principles, relevant languages and frameworks.
  • Professional experience in senior development roles.
  • A passion for developing high quality software.
  • Skill in driving outcomes through collaboration, coaching, and mentorship rather than direct authority.
  • A track record of working with agile practices and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
