About the Opportunity
Functioning in a co‑leadership capacity with the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) Zone Medical Department Head, and reporting to the Executive Director, the Central Zone Director of DPLM is responsible for the administrative and clinical operations of the DPLM and the delivery of a high quality, safe Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) service throughout the Central Zone. The Director is accountable for the service which is located at multiple facilities across the Zone, with the Mackenzie laboratory providing a referral service for all of Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada, performing highly complex specialty testing.
The Director promotes stewardship and sustainability practices and is accountable to ensure compliance with laboratory standards, accreditation requirements and continuous improvement within the Zone.
The Director interacts extensively with clinical and management staff, serving as the principal management point of contact for DPLM services within the zone. The Director collaborates and works consultatively with all Zone/IWK Directors and the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Network to support the standardization of service provincially, development of provincial business cases and policy development. The Director supports and provides direction to the Provincial PLM leads with accountabilities in POCT, asset management, client and support services as well as the Provincial Blood Coordinating Team.
About You
We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
Undergraduate degree on a health-related discipline, health administration, business administration or related subject
Certified with CSMLS as a Medical Laboratory Technologist
Licensed to practice by the Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists
Completion of a Leadership Management Program, or commitment to complete within a defined time period
5 years of relevant clinical laboratory management experience demonstrating progressive accountabilities for financial, strategic and people management to deliver high‑quality services
Excellent leadership, organizational and decision skills in support of patient, family and client‑centred laboratory services
Expert knowledge in the field to critically analyse evidence‑based practices to inform strategy development and organisational planning
Evidence‑based collaborative problem‑solving of complex multifaceted issues
Critical thinking and analytical problem‑solving skills
Understands the principles of project management and demonstrated ability to lead work teams
Quality improvement methodologies (e.g. LEAN)
Strong presentation and public speaking skills that adapt to audience needs
Demonstrated advanced communications skills and a positive energetic public persona
Ability to analyse and interpret laboratory statistical data and monitor quality and performance indicators and benchmarks
Possesses knowledge of laboratory information systems
Competencies in other languages are an asset, French preferred
