Job Summary

The Power Systems Specialist plays a key role in reaching the objectives of the Energy and Power Innovation Centre (EPIC). The incumbent will lead and execute applied research projects in diverse areas related to energy, power systems, and industrial communications. Given our close collaboration with industry and community, the projects will vary within the areas of electrical substation automation, hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulations particularly in the hardware setup, configuring and integrating protection and control equipment, development/implementation of SCADA systems and/or power & communication bi-directional flow for distributed energy resources.

In addition, it is critical that the incumbent develops and maintains a strong relationship with industry and community partners during all project phases, from scope definition to project delivery. The Power Systems Specialist requires strong technical and problem-solving skills, as well as great communication skills and a team player given that the role requires close collaboration with the Centre’s technical team and external stakeholders.

As part of the Applied Research (IDEAWORKS) department, EPIC provides expertise and facilities to support Canadian companies with their operational challenges with a particular focus on energy, industrial communications and data systems integration. The Centre also supports utilities and electrical companies with developing new solutions, as well as training in state-of-the-art facilities. The Centre has four focus areas including power systems, data systems integration, carbon reduction, and energy-related First Nations projects.

The incumbent will work in projects potentially related to more than one of the focus areas.

The Power Systems Specialist will lead projects in the above-mentioned areas requiring a combination of technical, project management, and student/staff supervision skills as part of on-going projects. In addition, it is expected that the incumbent supports the technical aspects of related funding proposals to provincial and federal funding agencies, as well as estimate fee-for-service related work. The incumbent will have a key role in building the project pipeline for the Centre, as well as building internal capacity within EPIC staff and students.

The incumbent will also be expected to present the work and promote the Centre in specific events.
