Located in Hamilton’s downtown core, Hamilton General Hospital provides leading edge care and is home to a number of regional referral programs. The neurosciences and trauma program is a provincial leader in both volume and complexity of care provided. The HGH stroke program has pioneered an integrated approach to care, and our burn treatment program is one of only two in Ontario.

The cardiac and vascular program performs more heart surgeries and procedures than any other facility in the province.

The inpatient neuroscience program on 7 South supports 26 acute stroke and 5 neurology beds. As one of the 11 Regional Stroke Centres in Ontario, it provides tertiary level acute stroke care to the 2.3 Million people within the region. It works with organizations within the region to provide access to best practice stroke care based on the Canadian Stroke Best Practices Recommendations.

The Hamilton General Hospital admits over 1000 acute stroke patients annually and ensures that patients who present with stroke from all HHS sites, St. Joseph’s Health Care Hamilton and Haldimand Memorial War Memorial have access to best practice acute stroke care.

Position Summary

Our Registered Practical Nurses develop and practice their skills in caring for stroke and Neurology patients in the acute phase of stroke care. Our unique care model provides opportunities for enhanced continuity of patient care through a specialized unit dedicated to the management of Stroke and Neurology patients with dynamic and strong interdisciplinary teams. As a member of the healthcare team in this unique model of care, the Registered Practical Nurse uses a client centered approach to patient care and provides nursing care within the Registered Practical Nurse scope of practice and the Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Stroke Care.

Rotating days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays

Qualifications

Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse

Current Medication Administration and Asepsis certificates

Current certificates or current Community College studies in asepsis, wound care, airway management, complex wound care, patient assessment, urinary catheterization, administering enteral feeds, IV administration, venipuncture, and management, transcribing physician orders

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification or equivalent

Completion of Physical Assessment Course

Minimum 2 years, recent experience in an acute adult medical/surgical unit, preferably with Stroke/Neurology patients

Completion ofthe telemetry pathway of Critical Practice Orientation (CPO) training or ability to complete this CPO training offered by HHS (ECG interpretation and monitoring for telemetry)

Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, high turnover environment

Demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills

Demonstrates critical thinking and decision making in assessment, problem identification and problem solving

Ability to prioritize and collaborate with the team when the patients conditions change

Willingness to participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and innovation

Evidence of commitment to professional practice and ongoing professional development
