McMaster Children’s Hospital, located in Hamilton’s west-end, is the second largest children’s hospital in Canada. We are home to the fastest-growing kids-only emergency department in Ontario, one of Canada’s most advanced neonatal intensive care units, and a range of programs and clinical specializations. Within the Pediatric Medicine and Surgery Clinics at McMaster Children's Hospital, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) works within the multidisciplinary team to provide assessment, intervention and follow-up for children and adolescents requiring specialized care.

Position Summary

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) will provide high quality patient care within the pediatric general surgery team, according to the professional standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, functioning as an active member of the multidisciplinary health care team using a client centered approach. The RPN is responsible for assessing care needs, implementing the health care plan and providing education and follow-up to patients and caregivers.

The RPN will work closely with interdisciplinary team members within the General Surgery team and across specialty services to do case management, patient education initiatives, support clinic related research projects, and performs other duties as assigned.

Schedule Work Hours

Monday to Friday; days. Evenings and weekends as needed

Qualifications
  • Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification

  • Minimum of 3 years recent pediatric nursing experience, within the last 5 years, in the medical care for children in a pediatric tertiary inpatient or outpatient setting

  • Proficiency with computer applications including Epic and Microsoft Office suite.

  • Wound care experience

  • Experience collaborating effectively with community care and other multi-disciplinary teams

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the approach to pediatric assessment, care planning, intervention and follow-up

  • Previous pediatric experience with patient care coordination, vital signs, patient navigation, clinic flow, coordinating follow-up and discharge support

  • Experience updating and monitoring patient care plans to ensure best care.

  • Excellent teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in health teaching with pediatric patients and their families individually and in a group setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with children and their families under stressful conditions

  • Evidence of a commitment to quality improvement, including experience working on projects that enhance patient care (including education material development and protocol development)

  • Demonstrated skills in psychosocial assessment

  • Ability to adapt to rapid change in patient condition workload status

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and the ability to organize and coordinate patient and family-centered care with other members of the healthcare team

  • Demonstrated ongoing professional development
