SMC Operations Lead

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Operations Lead coordinates the daily order fulfillment process, including order picking, packing, staging, shipping, and carrier loading. The position organizes and controls the workflow of a small team, verifies that products and documentation meet customer and company requirements, and promotes safe, accurate, process-oriented execution. The Operations Lead uses the ERP system, scan gun and barcode technology, reports, and performance metrics to support service, quality, and productivity objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Daily Order Fulfillment Coordination
• Coordinate the activities of employees assigned to the daily order fulfillment process and organize the work of a team of approximately three to four employees.
• Establish daily priorities based on order requirements, customer needs, carrier schedules, workload, and direction from the department supervisor.
• Monitor workflow across picking, packing, staging, shipping, and loading activities; adjust assignments and escalate constraints or exceptions as needed.
• Provide day-to-day work direction, process guidance, and training support while promoting consistent compliance with established procedures.
• Provide backup coverage for the area in the absence of the department supervisor, as assigned.

Order Picking
• Coordinate and perform order picking using the ERP system, scan guns, barcode technology, work instructions, and applicable order documentation.
• Verify product identification, quantity, lot or heat information, customer requirements, and order accuracy before material advances to packing.
• Identify orders requiring special handling, segregation, labeling, documentation, or customer-specific processing and ensure requirements are communicated and followed.
• Investigate and promptly resolve or escalate picking discrepancies, shortages, damaged material, or identification concerns.

Order Packing
• Ensure orders are packed in accordance with company-engineered packaging specifications, approved work instructions, and customer-specific requirements.
• Confirm that products are protected, secured, labeled, and prepared to support safe handling and quality delivery.
• Verify packaging materials, container selection, labels, markings, and enclosed documentation before shipment release.
• Maintain a high degree of focus on the accuracy and quality of products, packaging, labels, and shipping documents.

Shipping, Staging, and Carrier Loading
• Coordinate order staging by customer and carrier, maintaining clear identification and segregation of completed shipments.
• Verify shipment documentation for completeness and accuracy, including identifying information, quantities, transportation details, and required carrier forms.
• Prepare and process shipping transactions in ERP system and related procedures using scan guns, barcode technology, reports, and other approved tools.
• Coordinate and perform the loading of trailers, containers, straight trucks, and delivery vans while protecting material and securing loads.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Two to four years of manufacturing, distribution warehouse, shipping, receiving, warehousing, or order fulfillment experience required.
• Prior experience coordinating workflow or providing day-to-day direction to a small team preferred.
• Current forklift certification required, or ability to obtain and maintain certification in accordance with company requirements.
