Accounts Assistant – Hemel Hempstead

Salary: £28,000 - £32,000

We are recruiting on a confidential basis for an Accounts Assistant to join a well‑established organisation operating within the property and housing sector. This role sits within a central finance function and offers hands‑on exposure to high‑volume transactional accounting, customer queries and financial administration. This is a great opportunity for someone with existing finance experience who enjoys accuracy, problem‑solving and working as part of a collaborative team.

The Role

Working closely with a senior accountant, the Accounts Assistant will support the day‑to‑day running of a busy finance operation, ensuring transactions are processed accurately and queries are resolved efficiently.

  • Supporting daily payment and repayment processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Investigating and resolving returned or failed payments, liaising with customers where additional information is required
  • Monitoring and reducing unallocated balances through regular review and follow‑up
  • Managing and responding to finance‑related inbox queries, ensuring timely and professional communication
  • Liaising with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve queries and discrepancies
  • Assisting with daily reconciliations and reporting
  • Producing ad‑hoc reports to support finance and operational teams
  • Contributing to process improvements and documenting procedures
  • Providing cover across the wider finance team during periods of absence or peak workload
About You
  • Previous experience in a finance or accounts role
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Good working knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook, including basic data manipulation
  • Confidence communicating with a range of stakeholders, both internally and externally
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise effectively
  • A customer‑focused approach and a willingness to learn

AAT or similar qualifications are beneficial but not essential. Candidates qualified by experience are equally encouraged to apply.
