Wye Valley NHS Trust wishes to appoint Clinical Fellows in Emergency and General Surgery, based at the County Hospital, Hereford. Successful applicants will be offered a 12‑month post in General & Emergency Surgery, aimed at supporting acute and ambulatory general surgical flow within the trust.
Main duties of the jobThe post holders will have supervised responsibility for elective and acute surgical inpatients, including preparation for theatre and postoperative care. They are expected to assist in theatre during operation lists and to receive appropriate training.
During on‑call/acute shifts, the post holder will be based primarily in the Surgical Same Day Emergency Care unit, gaining experience in acute ambulatory surgical care, including urology. They will also participate fully in the acute take, including post‑take ward round, patient assessment in the Emergency department, 'hot' clinics and participation in the NCEPOD theatre sessions.
All resident surgical staff have the opportunity to attend outpatient clinics and will receive support and supervision from consultant surgeons.
The post provides wide experience in the management of common acute and elective general and gastrointestinal conditions. The post holder will assist in operating lists and learn to perform ward procedures.
Comprehensive induction will be provided prior to commencement of clinical duties.

Education & Qualifications- Primary medical qualification – MBBS or equivalent.
- Full doctors GMC registration at time of application.
- MRCS.
- Experience of teaching and presenting.
- At least 18 months post‑MBBS clinical experience, including 6 months experience in any surgical specialty.
- 12 months NHS doctors experience.
- Clinical experience in related surgical specialties.
- Completion of PRHO training or equivalent.
- Understanding of principles of clinical governance.
- Experience of clinical audit.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to organise and prioritise own workload.
- Ability to work under pressure in a multi‑disciplinary environment.
- Ability to prioritise clinical needs.
- Must be able to demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Trust's values and behaviours.
