Water Resources Manager – 32733 at the Environment Agency

Role Overview

You will lead a department of more than 70 technical experts in Operations Catchment Services. The team provides a national water resources service, delivering statutory planning, outsourcing, and modelling to ensure a robust water supply for people, businesses and the environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Shape and scrutinise water companies’ statutory Water Resource Management Plans.
  • Provide expert input to the National Framework for Water Resources.
  • Manage programmes that deliver sustainable abstraction of water resources.
  • Lead drought planning and drought management initiatives.
  • Develop talent and skills in water planning across the department.
  • Oversee national modelling of water resources and groundwater.
  • Champion health, safety and wellbeing, fostering inclusion and supporting the growth and development of team members.
  • Contribute to the Operations Catchment Services Leadership Team, influencing the wider organisation.
Key Qualifications and Experience
  • Authentic leadership with a strong team focus and belief in protecting people and the environment.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with a customer‑first mindset and well‑honed influencing abilities.
  • Strategic thinker capable of spotting links and opportunities, while simplifying complex issues to focus on deliverables.
  • A working knowledge of water resources management and the environmental, political and economic pressures affecting water supply.
  • Experience managing large, cross‑functional programmes and delivering them on time and to required standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop people, ensuring they acquire the skills and knowledge needed for current and future roles.
Additional Information

All applicants will be assessed blind, based on their employment history and answers to competency questions. Interviews will be conducted via MS Teams on 27 January 2026. The role may be based at any Environment Agency office across England.
