The British Schools Museum in Hitchin is an independent museum set in former British School buildings, founded in 1810. We tell the story of childhood, education, and social change, welcoming families, schools, and visitors from across the region. The museum is supported by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.
We are now looking for a confident, friendly, and reliable Weekend Duty Manager to join us and lead front of house operations s is a hands on role where you will be the main point of contact on site, supporting volunteers, welcoming visitors, and ensuring the museum runs smoothly and safely.
Saturday and Sunday, 09:30 to 16:30 with half an hour for lunch. £12.30 per hour
. Job share will be considered, with one post covering Saturdays and one covering Sundays. Please specify in your application if this is your preference or availability.
Fixed term until December 2026. Funding is currently in place for one year, with the possibility of extension subject to securing additional funding.
The role includes- Opening and closing the museum
- Delivering a welcoming, inclusive visitor experience
- Leading guided tours
- Managing cash and card transactions
- Taking responsibility for health, safety, and security on site
You will be friendly, organised, and confident when working with the public. You will be happy taking responsibility, using your initiative, and working in a busy visitor environment. An interest in museums, history, or community work is welcome but not essential. Training and support will be provided.
Interviews will take place during the week commencing 3 February.
