Reporting to the Manager of Solution Delivery within the Government Information and Planning, the Structured Cabling Technician will follow Nunavut's structured cabling guidelines and procedures. The GN use Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) structured cabling and fiber optic cabling extensively throughout its Internet Cache Protocol (ICT) network infrastructure for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks (LAN and MAN) connectivity. This ICT infrastructure is continuously growing and migrating to modular implementations of Computing-Aware Traffic CAT Se/ 6 UTP and Corning plug n play fiber optic cabling systems.

These connectivity standards are being deployed in all communities and various offices of the GN throughout Nunavut. This position will also provide detailed documentation and updates to structured cabling plans for GN facilities. Travel to all GN communities is a regular part of this position scope.

The following are some of the key responsibilities of the Structured Cabling Technician:

  • Installation and termination of UTP structured cabling systems including but not limited to CAT Se/ 6 cabling and cable panels into new and existing buildings following GN structured cabling guidelines.
  • Installation of structured cabling raceways, cable trays and outlets/ wall jacks.
  • Installation of external to internal telecommunication cabling systems for connectivity to network equipment.
  • Modification and removal of existing structured cabling environments when required.
  • Test and verification of structured cabling installations including documentation of the results.
  • Troubleshooting issues and problems related to structured cabling in GN offices and Telecommunication rooms.
  • Creating and updating structured cable documentation and existing cable plans.
  • Working on identified internal related projects.
  • Contributing to the postmortem analysis following structured cabling problems or failures. This may lead to recommendations or adjustments to procedures to prevent future issues.
  • Reporting any project scope changes, issues, or concerns to assigned contacts.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a High School Diploma plus three (3) years of experience in UTP structured cabling installations including termination, testing, troubleshooting, cable trays and raceways and endpoint/ wall jacks. Certification for either Belden or Nordix UTP structured cabling systems or equivalent certifications from recognized institutions are also required. A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required.

Assets include experience with fiber optic cabling installations and termination; awareness of the Nunavut informatics environment including knowledge of the Government and Information Planning division mission, organizational structure, mandates and technical infrastructure. Proficiency in working with copper and fiber optic cables with the necessary certifications to handle and install these cables as well as other network equipment is also an asset.

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset.

Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture,land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
