Research HPC Engineer

Location: Via Milano

IFOM is an internationally recognized non‑profit cancer research institute in Milan, supported by the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC). We recruit highly selected researchers from over 24 countries to advance our cutting‑edge cancer research programs.
About the Position
We are looking for a Research HPC Engineer to support and expand our Research Computing Infrastructure, serving genomics, imaging, and clinical data workflows both on‑premises and in the cloud.
The ideal candidate brings at least 5 years of experience in HPC environments, Linux, and container solutions. You will join the Research Computing & Data Science unit to manage HPC clusters (SLURM), research servers, and hybrid cloud infrastructure.
Responsibilities

Administer and support on‑premises HPC SLURM clusters and research servers.
Design and manage containerised environments (Kubernetes, Singularity/Apptainer, Docker) for scientific workflows.
Optimize compute and storage configurations for scientific workloads.
Support hybrid infrastructure, including cloud‑based environments.
Develop automation using scripting and configuration‑management tools.
Contribute to system lifecycle planning, capacity management, and resource optimisation.
Provide technical support for research computing projects and scientific applications.
Work with scientific workflow tools (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake) and consider AI‑driven computational environments.
Provide training and documentation for researchers using HPC/cloud resources.
Collaborate with IT and research teams to integrate infrastructure and meet computational requirements.
Maintain system security and compliance, including GDPR and regulated data types.
Manage research data storage systems and high‑speed data transfer solutions.

Qualifications

3+ years of public cloud experience (AWS, GCP, Azure).
Strong background in HPC resource management (SLURM preferred).

Experience with GPU computing and NVIDIA/CUDA environments.
Scientific software building and packaging (Spack, Conda, Environment Modules).
Automation tools (Ansible, Terraform, Puppet).
Familiarity with data governance and FAIR data principles for scientific research.

Education
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or equivalent, with at least five years of relevant experience;
Master's or PhD in a related field is preferred.
Experience in academic or research settings with life‑science workflows is an asset.
