Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society (KAFS) is an Indigenous service delivery agency located in Kamloops, BC. Our team currently has 30 staff offering comprehensive services to the community from infancy to golden age in Kamloops for over 50 years.
All our programs are embedded in culture. We find that many of our clients are looking for this and appreciate cultural practices such as smudging and drumming that happen on a regular basis. We are governed by a volunteer board and bylaws. Each year we hold annual general meetings and present an audited statement to the membership and our funders.
THE OPPORTUNITY:The Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society is looking for a young energetic youth worker that will provide services to our Urban Indigenous youth. The Youth Worker will provide for High-Risk youth ages 13 – 18 years of age with support and encourage them to participate in programming offered at the KAFS. Provide youth with information and assist them to access educational, employment, social, recreational, and cultural opportunities.
REQUIREMENTS– WHAT YOU BRING TO KAFS:

- Alcohol and drug issues/ referring when necessary
- Crisis intervention

- Outgoing, approachable, open communication with youth
- Strong team player
- Conflict resolution and advocacy skills
- One on one counseling
- Supervisory skills with youth
- Documentation skills mandatory
- Facilitate workshops and meetings
- Computer skills
- Develop and maintain supportive relationships with Youth at risk
- Encourage youth to participate in programming available at KAFS.
- Provide youth with information and assist them to access educational, employment, social and recreational opportunities

- Minimum:
Social Service Certificate or Related field. - Minimum 3 years work experience working with high-risk youth.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working with all Indigenous youth.
- Able to mentor Youth that are young and energetic
- Own Vehicle
- Class 4 preferred
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monthly reports submitted to Family Service Manager
- Attend all meetings for youth at risk.
- Documentation and report writing
- Planning and scheduling of Youth Activities, gatherings, fundraising.
- Ensure that all reporting complies to the Ministry of Children and Family Development
- Will work hand in hand with the other Youth Workers in providing advocacy, crisis intervention and prevention, street work/outreach, networking/community
- development, cultural awareness, recreation, education, and positive role modeling.
Preference will be given to applicants of Aboriginal ancestry as per section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code (please self-identity in your cover letter).
WORKINGSCHEDULE:
- Hours:
Monday to Friday 8:30-4:30 - Some Flex time will be required
- $26-29/hour, based on skill set and experience
