Large Volume Inorganic Chemicals (LVIC) installations are required to use ‘Best Available Techniques’ (BAT) to reduce emissions to air, water and land. We’ve established a process for the definition of BAT within the UK. The regime will use the BAT concept principles of a transparent, collaborative, data‑ and evidence‑led process that safeguards and builds on the current high levels of environmental protection.

Central to this process will be the UK BAT Author.

Responsibilities

You’ll be responsible for drafting BAT Conclusions, liaising with Technical Working Groups and presenting a final document suitable for publication as a new, UK‑wide, environmental standard for industry.

Key Skills and Experience
  • Specialist knowledge and understanding of the LVIC industry
  • Good understanding of process engineering and environmental issues
  • Good understanding of environmental legislation and policy in the UK
  • Capability to critically analyse technical arguments and data
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Good project‑management skills and drive to complete tasks
Experience and Qualification Requirements
  • At least 5 years of working experience with a solid understanding of environmental regulation within the LVIC industry
  • Expertise in the large‑volume inorganic chemicals industry
  • Knowledge of UK and EU industrial environmental legislation, particularly the IED and the Environmental Permitting Regulations
  • Skill in collection and technical analysis of complex industrial data
  • Understanding the implications of BAT Conclusions in permits, on industry and the environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships
  • Planning, prioritising and organising tasks and resources to ensure timely and effective results
  • Responding flexibly to challenges and building consensus
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and encourage others to consider diversity issues
