Job Description

Large Slaughterhouses and Animal By‑Products installations are required to use ‘Best Available Techniques’ (BAT) to reduce emissions to air, water and land. The UK BAT Author leads a transparent, collaborative, data‑driven process that safeguards and builds on the current high levels of environmental protection.

Responsibilities
  • Draft BAT Conclusions, liaise with Technical Working Groups and produce a final document suitable for publication as a new, UK‑wide, environmental standard for industry.
  • Critically analyse technical arguments and data.
  • Write and edit technical documents.
  • Manage project deliverables and meet deadlines.
  • Coordinate travel and overnight stays as required.
Experience & Skills Required

At least 5 years working experience and a solid understanding of environmental regulation in the SA industry.

  • Expertise in the slaughterhouse and animal by‑products industry.
  • In‑depth knowledge of UK and EU industrial environmental legislation, including the IED and the Environmental Permitting Regulations.
  • Collection and technical analysis of complex industrial data.
  • Understanding of the implications of BAT Conclusions in permits and their impact on industry and the environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Planning, prioritising and organising tasks and resources to ensure timely and effective results.
  • Flexibility to respond to challenges and build consensus.
  • Working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
