Mission

The Laboratory of Urban and Environmental Systems (URBES) at EPFL is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to assess the impact of future climate change on hydropower production in the Swiss Alps. At URBES we seek to describe and predict land‑atmosphere interactions and coupled human‑natural processes across a broad spectrum of spatiotemporal scales. Our aim is to elucidate complex socio‑ecological dynamics, quantify the local and non‑local impacts of human activities, and guide the design of greener, healthier, and more sustainable territories.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on the project "Assessing the impact of climate change on SBB hydroelectric power production" within the framework of the SBB – EPFL Research Initiative.

Main Duties And Responsibilities
  • Downscale the latest climate projections for Switzerland.
  • Set up, run, and analyse high‑resolution eco‑hydrological simulations.
  • Lead the writing of project reports and scientific publications for high‑impact journals.
  • Effectively maintain the relationships between project partners.
  • Deliver project outputs in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Contribute to the broad activities of the lab (e.g., co‑supervision of master students).
Profile
  • You have (or are close to completing) a PhD in the field of Hydrology, Climate Sciences, Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • You have strong computational and analytical skills, as well as experience handling large datasets and leading/managing projects.
  • You have a strong publication record (relative to your career stage) on topics relevant for this project.
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
We offer
  • A stimulating and international working environment and numerous opportunities to collaborate with various partners in Switzerland and abroad.
  • Competitive salary and excellent working conditions.
