OverviewAs a member of the military, Weapons Engineering Technicians are responsible for the corrective and planned maintenance activities of the Weapons, Communications, Radar, and Marine Navigation systems onboard a ship.
Primary responsibilities include:- Monitoring and evaluating the performance of electronic equipment
- Operating electronic diagnosis systems, specialized tools, and test equipment
- Performing diagnostic analysis on components and systems to identify faults
- Repairing faulty electronic equipment to restore system function
- Inspecting, maintaining, and installing electronic components
- Compiling test logs, evaluation reports, equipment maintenance documentation, and reading electronic drawings
Weapons Engineering Technicians spend much of their career onboard ships with "home ports" in Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Esquimalt, British Columbia. They experience work at sea, working in small spaces, on open decks, repairing and maintaining equipment, often on a rotating shift or watch system.
Typically, they work the regular day shift onboard assigned ships. Additional duties may include cleaning, painting, working in the cafeteria, and loading supplies.
Career optionsJoining the Regular Force may involve relocations after training, whereas the Primary Reserve Force offers part-time work at a specific Reserve unit with minimal relocations, typically working one night per week and some weekends.
Entry requirements- Completion of provincial Grade 10 or Quebec Secondary 4, including Grade 10 Applied Math;
Physics is an asset. - Having a college diploma or Red Seal in a related civilian occupation is preferred.
- Foreign education may be accepted.
The training includes Basic Military Qualification, academic training at Naval Fleet School Atlantic, and applications training in Halifax or Esquimalt, totaling approximately 9 months. Additional specialized skills training may be available.
