OverviewAs a member of the military, Signal Operators provide reliable wired and wireless communications and information systems using leading edge voice and data systems. They are part of a larger team that provides Army units and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with communications and information services throughout Canada and around the world.
Signal Operators install, troubleshoot, and operate advanced communications and information systems, including:
- Wired and wireless communications and information systems
- Radio, satellite, and microwave broadband systems
- Fibre optic and copper wire broadband technology
- Voice and data systems
Signal Operators work outdoors, in military vehicles, and temporary shelters such as tents. They serve across Canada and worldwide wherever the CAF operates. Upon joining the Regular Force, after training, you'll be assigned to a base with possible relocations. In the Primary Reserve, you serve part-time at a local unit, with flexible postings and opportunities for full-time employment.
Entry plans- Direct Entry Options
No prior experience or specific skills are required. The minimum education is Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Grade 10 Applied Math. Foreign education may be accepted.
TrainingThe initial training is Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, covering physical fitness and basic skills. Signal Operators then attend the Canadian Forces School of Communication and Electronics in Kingston, Ontario, for approximately 19 weeks, learning about communication security, tactical systems, radio, satellite, and microwave communications. Advanced courses and on-the-job training are available for specialized skills and leadership development.
Part-timeoptions
Part-time employment is available through the Primary Reserve at various locations. Reservists serve in their communities, can study or work civilian jobs, and may volunteer for deployments. They are paid at 92.8% of Regular Force pay, with benefits and pension contributions.
