Overview

Pen Underwriting is looking for an experienced Motor Fleet Underwriter to effectively support the management of our Hazardous Goods & Environmental Motor Fleet portfolios. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the performance of our existing business team and underwriters, maximising underwriting performance and driving business revenue and structured growth.

How You’ll Make An Impact
  • Technical Underwriting & Expertise:
    Support the Motor underwriting function, providing technical expertise across all Motor lines. Handle referrals and underwriting for both new and existing business, contributing to profitable growth.
  • Underwriting Governance & Compliance:
    Ensure adherence to internal underwriting governance, including audits, peer reviews, and risk assessments. Collaborate with the Head of Motor for guidance on process improvements and policy updates.
  • Capacity Management & Relationships:
    Support the management of capacity relationships, ensuring strong and collaborative engagement. Participate in reporting, portfolio reviews, and capacity‑related meetings.
  • Market Expertise & Broker Relationships:
    Demonstrate market expertise with knowledge of industry trends, competitor activity, and regulatory changes. Build and maintain relationships with key brokers, supporting new business and retention efforts.
  • Leadership & Development:
    Act as a mentor for junior underwriters, fostering a culture of technical excellence and professional development. Support training, development, and succession planning.
  • Pricing & Portfolio Management:
    Assist in developing and refining underwriting and pricing strategies to achieve profitability targets. Monitor market trends and competitor activity to ensure competitive positioning.
  • Regulatory & Conduct Responsibilities:
    Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and governance frameworks, including FCA requirements. Support Fair Value Assessments (FVA) and Consumer Duty compliance.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Retention of renewal business and high customer retention rates.
  • Growth in Gross Written Premium (GWP) and maintenance of rate strength.
  • Performance against underwriting profitability and loss ratio targets.
  • Compliance with governance and regulatory standards.
About You
  • Technical Knowledge:
    Basic knowledge of general insurance (London Market / Lloyd’s and Industry) products, services, and understanding of underlying legal principles.
  • Experience:

    Previous Motor Fleet underwriting experience. Previous experience in managing a scheme/portfolio is desirable.
  • Skills:

    Excellent interpersonal skills, including listening, verbal and written communication. Ability to manage complex and highly confidential information. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
