Job Overview

The successful candidate will have a special interest in trauma surgery and laparoscopic reconstruction surgery (LRS). The appointee will be responsible for the clinical care of patients, undertaking ward rounds, operating sessions, and outpatient clinics. The role will work closely in partnership with existing surgeons and may visit other surgical centres of excellence to enhance training and skills. Post‑operative care of patients is covered by on‑call consultant colleagues during out of hours and/or weekends.

Main Duties of the Job

Trauma or elective week as part of the established 24‑week rolling rota.

  • On‑call responsibilities (nominated on‑call days 1:4 weeks Monday to Thursday and 1:8 weekends). Maximum average emergency work per week during premium time is estimated at 3 hours.
  • Weekends alternate between first consultant on call and second consultant on‑call.
  • 8.5 Pas DCC and 1.5 Pa SPA will be offered.
  • The job plan is subject to change and agreement with the successful applicant and will be reviewed in line with institution policy.

  • Excellent clinical skills in assessment and appropriate investigation, treatment and disposal of a broad range of orthopaedic and trauma presentations.
Knowledge / Research (Essential)
  • Working knowledge of research methodologies and direct involvement in the management of basic science and clinical research projects.
  • Working knowledge of audit process.
  • Thorough knowledge of orthopaedic & trauma surgery.
Knowledge / Research (Desirable)
  • Research/publications in orthopaedic & trauma, LRS.
  • Postgraduate research-based degree.
  • Knowledge and principles of resource and budget management.
  • Understanding the importance of clinicians in management.
  • Awareness of core values of the NHS in its modern structure.
Education and Training (Essential)
  • On the specialist register.
  • Specialist fellowship training in LRS.
Education and Training (Desirable)
  • Management training of various types.
Experience (Essential)
  • Broad based clinical experience in the management of general trauma, LRS including arthroscopic and arthroplasty surgery.
  • Broad based clinical experience of LRS.
  • Fellowship trained LRS.
  • Demonstrated operative experience in management of general trauma.
  • Application/acknowledgement of evidence-based practice.
  • Participation in major trauma and general on call rota.
Experience (Desirable)
  • Skills to enhance the existing trauma and elective orthopaedic service.
Other Requirements (Essential)
  • High moral and professional ethical standards.
  • Involvement in postgraduate teaching.
Other Requirements (Desirable)
  • Involvement in organisation and running of a postgraduate degree programme.
  • Experience in the design and management of a research project.
  • Experience in the principles and practice of consent for research.
  • Experience in obtaining ethical approval for research studies.
