We are looking for highly motivated nurses to work in our busy and challenging Critical Care environment and our enhanced surgical recovery area. Our Critical Care Department has 33 commissioned critical care beds for Level 2 and 3 patients, and also an exciting 5‑bed enhanced surgical recovery unit caring for Level 1.5 elective post‑op patients. The Critical Care Team is responsible for:
- Caring for critically ill patients in the hospital
- Caring for patients after major operations
- Providing first‑responder support to all unstable patients in the hospital
The Royal site is also a regional specialist centre for infectious diseases, acute pancreatitis, hepatobiliary surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery and thrombocytopenic purpura. Critical care also provides an outreach service, follow‑up clinics, and psychological support for patients, relatives and staff.
We provide a dedicated Practice Educator team, in‑house training, and further CPD opportunities, including the Critical Care course. Successful applicants may work ‘long days’ after completing at least 60% of Step 1 competencies. Prior to that, postholders will be expected to complete a mix of early, late and night shifts.
ResponsibilitiesParticipate in maintaining a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers, and maintain agreed standards of nursing care. Determine nursing priorities and plan patient care. Inform the nurse in charge of any changes in circumstances that may affect patient care. Maintain nursing records in accordance with NMC and Trust guidelines. Contribute to the development of the Essence of Care and to clinical benchmarking within the unit.
Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients, and provide information and support to patients/carers. Assist with the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs, including inotropes. Develop and possess clinical knowledge and skills to care for critically ill patients, including management of multiple organ failure and complex nursing needs. Undertake expanded practice to optimise patient care, in accordance with unit and Trust policies, including respiratory support, haemodynamic monitoring and renal replacement therapies.
Act at all times in a manner that upholds the reputation of the Trust and safeguards the wellbeing and dignity of patients and their relatives, in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and Guidance documents. Maintain active status on NMC Register. Continuously improve knowledge; identify objectives within a PDP that support high standards of clinical care. Provide cover for absent colleagues as necessary and follow all organisational policies and procedures.
PersonSpecification Essential Qualifications
- Registered Nurse, current NMC registration
- Diploma in Nursing
- Mentorship/teaching qualification
- Post‑registration qualification in relevant specialty
- Minimum 6 months post‑registration experience and successful completion of band 5 foundation gateway competencies
- Experience with in relevant clinical setting
- Evidence of maintaining a clinical learning environment
- Evidence of working with students
- Knowledge of current nursing issues and clinical governance
- Demonstrated awareness of own limitations
- Ability to organise workload and delegate tasks appropriately
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to support less experienced staff
- Ability to problem solve
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Basic IT skills, including e‑mail and word processing
