Postdoctoral Research Associate – Monastic Economies

This role is offered by the Department of History at the University of Liverpool in partnership with Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen.

The project “Monastic Economies in the Carolingian Age – Farfa and Fulda” is funded by the AHRC and DFG. It aims to illuminate the economies created by the transfer of land to ecclesiastical institutions in the early medieval Latin West. The work is organised into four modules:

• Module 1 – critical digital editions of the relevant texts.
• Module 2 – comparative analysis of estate management, especially leasing arrangements.
• Module 3 – definition of terminology of measurement and scale.
• Module 4 – contextualisation of economic practices within spiritual and intellectual culture.

• Produce critical digital editions of primary texts from Farfa and Fulda.
• Analyse comparative management of estates, focusing on leasing arrangements.
• Place economic practices in the context of spiritual and intellectual culture.

• Outstanding interest in monastic history and early medieval Western European society.
• Strong background in Digital Humanities applied to medieval studies.
• Excellent working knowledge of Latin and experience with medieval Latin manuscripts.
• Proficiency in modern Italian, German and French.

• Fixed‑term contract for 34 months, commencing 2 March 2026.
• Grade 6 salary while awaiting PhD award;
  Grade 7 salary after award.
