Overview

As a member of the military, Imagery Technicians are visual media specialists responsible for operating, maintaining, and managing a wide variety of imaging equipment and products. They provide still and video coverage of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to support operations, public affairs, and internal communications.

The primary responsibilities include:

  • Producing still and video images
  • Using Infrared, Image Intensified, and thermal imagery equipment
  • Producing imagery with 3D animation
  • Downloading image data from sensors
  • Processing and duplicating aerial film
  • Categorizing, describing, storing, and retrieving imagery
  • Analyzing, annotating, and enhancing imagery
  • Performing color management
  • Producing imagery products
  • Maintaining an imagery database
  • Testing and evaluating new imaging equipment

Work environment

Imagery Technicians work alongside other CAF members across Army, Navy, and Air Force bases, documenting significant events. They may work at any base in Canada, on ships at sea, or overseas on UN and NATO missions.

If you join the Regular Force, you will be assigned to your first base after training, with possible relocations. In the Primary Reserve, you serve part-time at a local unit, typically one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment and deployments.

Entry requirements

  • Completion of Grade 12 or Secondary 5 in Quebec
  • College diploma preferred; the Forces will assess if your education qualifies for direct entry
  • Foreign education may be accepted

Training

Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and specialized training at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering in Borden, Ontario, lasting about four months. Training covers electronics, camera operation, image processing, equipment maintenance, and image management. Opportunities for advanced courses include photojournalism, video production, multimedia, underwater photography, and high-speed techniques.

Part-time options

This role is available part-time for the Reserve Force across Canada, with training erve members serve approximately 12 days per month, are paid at 92.8% of regular pay, and may volunteer for deployments or relocations. They work at various military locations within Canada and can serve with any branch of the CAF.
