Engineer - Reinforcement Learning

Huawei Canada has an immediate 12-month contract opening for an Engineer - Reinforcement Learning role. The Intelligent Complex Systems Team (Waterloo Research Centre) investigates AI and robotics advancements to determine potential applications, focusing on challenges such as aligning human capabilities and ensuring the safety of collaborative AI systems.

• Design and develop Reinforcement Learning solutions for self-adaptive systems to advance beyond current AI-based applications.
• Engage in research activities; identify new opportunities, present findings and progress to team members and stakeholders, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate research into practical applications.
• Work cross-functionally to set the broader strategy and roadmap.
• Mentor and guide junior team members to support their growth and development.
• Develop collaborations with external partners and research institutions to foster innovation and expand the reach of our research.

• MS or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics or Artificial Intelligence with a strong focus on Reinforcement Learning and AI system design.
• 3+ years of experience in research or industry roles related to Reinforcement Learning.
• Knowledge of applications of Reinforcement Learning at runtime leveraging operational data and environment feedback.
• Familiarity with state-of-the-art Reinforcement Learning algorithms.
• Proficiency in Python prototyping.
• Industry experience exploring Reinforcement Learning technologies for different domains (e.g., automotive, robotics).
• Experience developing self-adaptive systems or Online/Continual Reinforcement Learning-based systems.
• Proven track record of publications in AI, software engineering, or requirements engineering venues.
