Overview
As a member of the military, Naval Combat Information Operators are responsible for operating shipboard surveillance radars and associated systems, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems.
Naval Combat Information Operators assist and advise the ship’s leadership in navigation, anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. Their primary duties include:
- Configuring and operating command and control systems, radars, and communication equipment
- Analyzing equipment performance and performing fault diagnostics
- Collecting, analyzing, and disseminating tactical information
- Maintaining classified logs and publications
Work environment
Operators work mainly in the ship’s Operations Room with modern equipment, experiencing unique challenges y perform duties such as sentry or lookout, participate in search and rescue, act in emergency response teams, and may serve as part of naval boarding parties.
Career options include serving in the Regular Force or the Primary Reserve Force, with different commitments and postings. Training includes basic military qualification and specialized courses at naval schools.

- Minimum education:
Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec; foreign education may be accepted
Training
Initial training includes basic military qualification and approximately 26 weeks at naval schools, covering radar, communication, tactical procedures, and more. Advanced courses are available for specialization and leadership roles.
Part-time options
Part-time service is available through the Primary Reserve, with training, pay, and benefits comparable to full-time service, and opportunities for deployment.
