Job Description & How to Apply Below

About Our Client

Our client is a mission-driven nonprofit operating in the K–12 education sector. Over the past decade, they have partnered with schools, districts, and communities across the country to rethink how learning experiences are designed, moving away from top-down reform toward community-led design processes where students, families, educators, and administrators co-create the future of their schools.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a senior technology leader to own IT, security, AI adoption, and technology operations for a mission-driven education nonprofit. You’ll work closely with the COO, product, and development teams to build a secure, well-governed technology environment.

This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll oversee IT operations, security and privacy, AI tools, technology vendors, and the architecture and delivery of AI-enabled products. You’ll also establish the standards and processes needed to protect sensitive student data and support the organization as it grows.

Requirements
  • Served as the most senior IT, Engineering, or technology professional in an organization with approximately 50 to 500 employees, responsible for hands‑on tasks such as administration, identity management, onboarding, and vendor management.
  • Has personally owned security controls for sensitive data (student, health, financial, or similar), including handling at least one real incident or audit.
  • Has overseen and is familiar with software development teams that ship production software, either in‑house or outsourced. This includes setting priorities, managing delivery, approving architectural decisions, and enforcing quality and security standards.
  • Enough technical depth to hold their own in a review or strategic software discussion. A background as a hands‑on engineer is not required.
  • Has consolidated or governed tools across teams that were used to choosing their own.
  • Explains technical tradeoffs to non‑technical leaders in plain language.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily IT operations for a fully remote team, including Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Salesforce, Asana, SSO and MFA, device management, onboarding and offboarding, and access provisioning.
  • Consolidate all enterprise‑wide tools under a single owner: identify each tool, its users, the data it holds, and which tools to cut or consolidate.
  • Manage the security and privacy program, which includes policies, access reviews, endpoint protection, vendor evaluations, data processing agreement assessments, and incident response, in collaboration with the General Counsel and external security partners.
  • Establish clear rules for collecting, storing, sharing, and retaining partner and student data, and ensure that all teams adhere to these guidelines instead of using their own tools.
  • Lead the adoption of AI tools. Select and manage tools such as Claude Enterprise and ChatGPT Business, and train non‑technical staff to utilize them effectively.

Partner closely with the development teams responsible for the programmatic tools: establish delivery priorities with product management, coordinate the delivery schedule, and enforce clear standards for code reviews, testing, releases, and documentation.
  • Own the architecture, infrastructure, and data decisions for programmatic tools with the technical leads, including decisions on building, buying, or partnering, as well as managing external development vendors.

Build security into how software gets built: access to environments and data, secrets handling, dependency and vulnerability checks, and review before anything touches student data.
  • Build the technology roadmap with leadership, and recommend when and whom to hire as the function grows.
Nice to have
  • Has rolled out AI tools to non‑technical staff, including usage rules.
  • FERPA and COPPA experience. HIPAA, SOC 2 or GDPR experience also counts.
  • Background in an education nonprofit, charter network or edtech company.
  • Earlier career as a software engineer.
  • Experience managing nearshore or contracted development teams.
  • Familiarity with AI‑assisted development workflows and applications built on LLMs.
  • Experience managing an MSP or a vCISO.
  • Salesforce administration depth.
  • Has hired and built a small IT team.
  • Has worked in a fully remote organization.
Opportunity Details
