Highways / Drainage Engineer – Pell Frischmann
Based in either Manchester or Mold, you will join a growing team of Transport & Infrastructure Engineers/Consultants. Each office is centrally located with easy access to public transport and onsite parking.
As part of a national team you will work on projects across the country, collaborating with colleagues to deliver successful outcomes that meet our core business values.

Your key duties will include preparing detailed design, feasibility studies and scheme reports. You may also take responsibility for project management, budgeting, bill of quantities, and costings. Planning, scheduling and monitoring of work to meet deadlines is essential, as is providing direction to junior team members to support their development. You will collaborate across disciplines in projects assigned by the Project Manager.
MainDuties and Responsibilities
- Implement project requirements to fully meet the client brief in accordance with relevant standards.
- Collate project information and liaise with clients and third parties as required.
- Supervise site-based projects.
- Assist or lead with project delivery and delegate to more junior staff.
- Review and approve your own work and that of others, including third‑party design proposals.
- Collaborate effectively within an established team and contribute to a positive culture.
- BEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
- 3+ years’ experience as a civil engineer in the design of civils and drainage projects for residential and commercial schemes.
- Good working knowledge of Microdrainage, Causeway Flow and AutoCAD.
- Detailed knowledge of drainage design standards, construction practices, asset management and relevant legislation.
- Experience preparing drainage strategies, FRA’s S104/S106 agreements.
- Strong understanding of Health and Safety, including CDM responsibilities.
- Day‑to‑day management and leadership of project design, overseeing designs produced by consultants and managing input from other disciplines.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Client liaison and management.
- Managing project workloads, finances and ensuring compliance with briefs and financial constraints.
- Utility coordination and clash detection.
- Mentoring and developing less experienced staff, and building effective working relationships.
- Work under pressure, with strong organisational skills and ability to plan, organise and manage a complex workload with shifting deadlines.
- Experience in a fast‑paced design and project/programme management environment, ideally within infrastructure or a related field.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to deliver outcome‑focused solutions to complex situations.
- Ability to design highway engineering solutions, analyse complex information, and use relevant software for modelling and analysis.
- Experience developing Highway Specifications, Civils 3D and drainage design modelling tools.
- Clear, confident, enthusiastic communication skills to explain complex data to non‑specialist audiences and stakeholders.
