Overview

We are looking for an experienced and driven Principal Designer Advisor, responsible for both CDM and Building Regulations across multiple sectors including buildings, water, energy, defence, transportation and the built environment.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Nationally deliver Principal Designer duties for a diverse client base.
  • Provide advice on CDM compliance, develop CDM Strategy documents, PCI, Pre‑Construction Information Summary Documents and Health & Safety Files.
  • Assist clients in assessing the competency of Designers and Principal Contractors.
  • Review and comment on the suitability of key CDM documentation such as PCI, design risk assessments, Construction Phase Plan, F10 and Health & Safety File.
  • Review Building Regulations documentation (competency, approved documents, HRB Gateways 1‑3 submissions).
  • Facilitate and undertake Health & Safety by Design reviews (HAZID, HAZCON, HAZOP).
  • Attend design and client meetings to advise on hazards and risk at pre‑construction and construction stages.
  • Support Designers with application of CDM Principles of Prevention.
  • Manage workload and assist with bidding and proposal writing.
  • Liaise with stakeholders on projects (regulatory bodies, clients, Designers, Contractors).
  • Draft Health & Safety arrangements, Pre‑Construction Information and Health and Safety Files.
  • Identify health & safety gaps and advise clients.
  • Carry out internal roles of Project Safety Advisor and Principal Designer Advisor.
Candidate Specification Essential
  • Flexible with travel and able to travel to sites across the UK on occasion.
  • Experience on large scale projects in defence, water, energy, education, transportation and built environment sectors.
  • Strong passion for health & safety management and design & construction risk management.
  • Excellent knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, CDM Regulations and Building Regulations 2023 (England).
  • Chartered or equivalent in engineering, construction or project management, or significant relevant experience.
  • NEBOSH National General or Construction Certificate.
  • Extensive experience in CDM / health and safety consultancy.
  • Extensive experience delivering compliant building designs; detailed knowledge of at least one approved building regulation document (e.g., Document

    A).
  • Experience in a multi‑disciplinary consultancy environment.
  • Proactive with strong organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Excellent client‑facing and communication skills.
  • Experience of site H&S inspections and audits.
  • Good technical and report‑writing skills.
  • Delivery of training and presentations.
Desirable
  • NEBOSH diploma, degree or NVQ in health and safety.
  • Membership of Institute for Occupational Health & Safety or Association for Project Safety.
  • Membership of an engineering institution.
  • Experience in roles within Client, Principal Contractor and Principal Designer organisations and knowledge of their CDM responsibilities.
