Job OverviewThis role combines responsibilities for two positions:
Internal/External Hazards – Systems Engineer and Senior Manager – Power Station Integration.
- Reporting to the Mitigative Measures and Hazards Senior Manager.
- Develop solutions to protect safety‑categorized equipment from internal and external hazards (fire, blast, pipe whip, steam release, missiles, explosions, seismic, flooding, meteorological hazards, etc.).
- Design integrated safety arguments and hazard mitigation measures for plant‑level and civil structure modifications.
- Interface with key stakeholders (Layout, Civils, Fire Protection, Human Factors, EC&I, etc.).
- Produce high‑quality deliverables:
Hazard Protection Measure Requirements (DOORS), Design Descriptions, and Design Substantiation Reports. - Maintain quality through technical reviews/gated reviews throughout the SMR project lifecycle.
- Develop and manage the integrated functional design of the power station, ensuring functional, performance, and operational requirements are met.
- Lead cross‑functional design coordination and resolve design issues across multiple islands (e.g., Reactor Island with Turbine Island).
- Ensure adequate Defence‑In‑Depth across all operating conditions and plant configurations.
- Collaborate with system owners, operations, and Human Factors to integrate detailed operating philosophy and control logic.
- Manage cross‑island design integration activities and represent SMR to external stakeholders.
- Lead a team of engineers, providing supervision, guidance, and coaching.
- Support the licensing process and respond to regulatory requests.
- Plan and deliver project milestones on time, within budget, and with quality.
- Apply an agile methodology to drive schedule and cost certainty.
- Manage plant‑level risk and comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Familiarity with internal/external hazard safety case and mitigative design features.
- Domain knowledge of nuclear industry civil plant design and behaviour.
- Systems engineering fundamentals (requirements capture, compliance demonstration, optioneering).
- Ability to define and deliver a project/programme of work under budget.
- Robust understanding of relevant thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, or structural analysis.
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics.
- Conventional power generation technology.
- Pressurised Water Reactor operations, philosophy, and procedures (desirable).
- Knowledge of E3S regulations and principles (ALARP, BAT).
- Understanding of UK and EU legislative requirements.
- Requirements development, REDV data management.
- Functional interface development and management.
- Delivery of complex industrial plant projects.
- Experience in power generation or nuclear industry.
- Front‑end engineering design experience.
- Define engineering projects/programmes and deliver milestones.
- Risk management and progress monitoring.
- Technical supervision, checking, and output approval.
- Chair design reviews.
- Lead engineering teams and deliver complex programmes.
- People development, feedback, and coaching.
- Resource and task prioritisation.
- Team recruitment.
- Awareness of ISO 15288 and systems engineering life cycles.
- Requirements management and model‑based systems engineering.
- Degree or equivalent in Mechanical, Electrical, Process Engineering, or related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (or working towards) with design leadership experience.
- Direct experience in design or operation of a complex industrial facility.
- Excellent communication skills across all audiences.
- Project Management Qualification desirable.
