We are recruiting for a Mechanical Associate to join our Building Environments team in our Manchester office. The role will offer the opportunity to immerse yourself in a varied portfolio of engaging and dynamic projects both in the UK and globally, including unique high‑profile projects such as the Wrexham AFC Kop Stand Redevelopment, MMU All Saints Library, and the Sister Manchester Plot

Our Manchester Building Services (MEP) team is involved in a wide variety of challenging and exciting projects. Buro Happold’s team continues to deliver cutting‑edge design solutions that encourage efficient use of materials, energy and natural resources. Our holistic, multidisciplinary design environment affords our engineers the freedom to push the boundaries of sustainable building technology across HVAC, electricity and plumbing in close collaboration with specialist groups.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the mechanical team and take a project leadership role as required.
- Communicate directly with clients, offering innovative design solutions and managing expectations.
- Prepare technical and financial proposals for new work.
- Manage workload of engineers and technicians.
- Prepare technical specifications.
- Monitor financial performance of jobs and manage project administrative systems.
- Undertake detailed mechanical building‑services design and calculations using Revit and IES software, with an appreciation of embodied carbon.
- Implement technologies to improve performance and sustainability to meet net‑zero targets by 2030.
- Ensure projects are delivered to an excellent standard, within agreed deadlines and budget.
- Engage with colleagues across disciplines in group discussions and events.
- Mentor junior team members, potentially leading to an early line‑management role.
- Extensive mechanical design experience in an MEP consultancy, with experience acting as project leader.
- Diverse sector experience, ideally with large‑scale projects.
- Strong interpersonal and organisational skills.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering.
- Professionally registered with a relevant institution; e.g. CIBSE, IMechE.
- A good understanding of other design disciplines.
- Broad design knowledge using British, US and European codes of practice.
- Experience using Revit, IES and willingness to learn new analysis packages.
- Digital engineering skills or use of automation tools advantageous.
