Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior Physiotherapist to rotate between a range of clinical areas at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, including medical and clinical oncology, surgery, critical care, haematology and specialized units such as CAR‑T, Proton Beam Therapy and Teenage & Young Adult Oncology. The post holder will manage a clinical caseload, develop individualized programmes of care, and coordinate, supervise and support Band 5 Physiotherapists, Therapy Assistants and students across these settings.

Main Duties

The Band 6 Physiotherapist will provide a high‑quality, efficient Physiotherapy service on a rotational basis to the clinical and medical oncology, surgery, critical care, haematology oncology, proton and teenage & young adult service within The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervision and education of junior staff and students, and delivery of in‑service training to the wider rehabilitation team.
  • Assistance with the promotion and development of the Physiotherapy service.
  • Flexible working and participation in the emergency on‑call service, including evenings, weekends and out‑of‑hours coverage.
Job Responsibilities Clinical
  • Deliver physiotherapy treatment to a specified patient population, using advanced clinical reasoning to develop individualized care programmes.
  • Provide treatment to medical/clinical oncology, haematology, proton and surgical/critical care patients on a rotational basis, with caseload extending to outpatient clinics such as CAR‑T and plastic surgery.
  • Accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients.
  • Provide specialist physiotherapy advice and input at multidisciplinary team meetings, clinics and case conferences.
  • Assess patients for specialist equipment (manual handling, orthotics) and supply/fit appropriate orthotic devices for spinal compression and fractures.
  • Ensure safe and competent use of all physiotherapy equipment, and that staff and carers attain competency.
  • Assist physiotherapy provision in other hospital areas during staff absence.
  • Active participation in the weekend and out‑of‑hours on‑call service.
  • Produce timely reports, continuity assessments and discharge summaries to external agencies (GPs, consultants, social services).

  • Develop, implement and review clinical standards relevant to the work area.
  • Stay current with developments through continuous professional development and audit/clinical projects.
  • Participate in training, study days and conferences locally and regionally.
  • Demonstrate understanding of clinical governance, risk management and multidisciplinary service delivery.
  • Advise on roles of physiotherapy in oncology and palliative care.
Organisational
  • Manage a designated area of work as agreed with the physiotherapy manager.
  • Prioritise workload, balancing patient and professional demands in line with department objectives.
  • Work flexibly across all areas required, including out‑of‑hours coverage.
  • Handle equipment used in physiotherapy duties and comply with organisational policies.
  • Participate in the Trust’s mandatory training programme.
Person Specification Essential
  • Qualifications: Physiotherapy degree (or equivalent), State registration, Completion of a Clinical Educators course.
  • Experience: Post‑registration experience in a junior physiotherapy role, NHS experience, on‑call rota experience, experience in treating cancer patients, experience in educational development of staff/students.
  • Skills: Good written and verbal communication, clinical reasoning, basic IT skills, experience within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of respiratory, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions; pathophysiology of cancer and treatment; critical care and surgery.
