Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior Physiotherapist to rotate between a range of clinical areas at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, including medical and clinical oncology, surgery, critical care, haematology, CAR‑T, Proton Beam Therapy and Teenage & Young Adult Oncology. The post holder will rotate between inpatient settings and specialist clinics, managing a clinical caseload and using strong clinical reasoning skills to develop and provide individualised programmes of care.

They will also coordinate, supervise and support Band 5 Physiotherapists, Therapy Assistants and students across these areas, and contribute to service development with support from the Band 7 lead.

Main duties of the job

The Band 6 Physiotherapist will deliver a high‑quality, efficient Physiotherapy service on a rotational basis to the clinical and medical oncology, surgery, critical care, haematology, oncology and teenage/young adult services within the Christie NHS Foundation Trust. They will provide supervision and education to junior staff and students, and contribute to in‑service training for the wider rehabilitation team. They will assist with promotion and development of the Physiotherapy service and be required to work flexibly, including evening and weekend on‑call duties.

Responsibilities CLINICAL
  • Ensure effective delivery of physiotherapy treatment to a specified patient population, using advanced clinical reasoning skills to develop and provide individualised programmes of care.
  • Provide treatment to medical/clinical oncology, haematological, proton and surgical/critical care patients on a clinical rotational basis, including outpatient clinics such as CAR‑T and Proton Beam.
  • Accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients.
  • Provide educational support and supervision of student physiotherapists.
  • Educate, support and supervise junior and non‑qualified staff within the clinical team.
  • Line‑manage junior/non‑qualified staff.
  • Provide specialist physiotherapy advice at MDT meetings, clinics and case conferences.
  • Use advanced communication skills when providing and receiving patient‑related information.
  • Assess patients for specialist equipment required for manual handling, stabilisation and mobility, including orthotics.
  • Ensure safe and competent use of all physiotherapy equipment, and ensure junior staff, assistants, students and carers attain competency prior to use.
  • Assist the physiotherapy provision in other hospital areas during staff absence.
  • Be an active member of the weekend and out‑of‑hours on‑call service.
  • Supply and fit patients with suspected/actual spinal cord compression or fractures with appropriate orthotic collars and braces.
  • Provide appropriate levels of care in managing orthotic devices when staff are unable to facilitate this themselves.
  • Educate patients, staff, family and carers in competent management and safe use of orthotic devices.
  • Produce timely and informative reports, continuing healthcare assessments and discharge summaries for other agencies to ensure effective pathways of care.
