Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Associate to join our Manchester Property & Liability team. The successful candidate will work across complex property claims (including large-scale first-party losses), coverage issues, defended liability and indemnity matters, as well as subrogated recovery. You will advise clients on all aspects of these claims, from initial investigation through to resolution, whether by negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
- Manage a portfolio of complex property claims, including large-scale losses (e.g. fire, flood, business interruption)
- Provide robust advice on coverage issues, policy interpretation and defences, ensuring that clients understand their rights and obligations
- Handle subrogated recovery work: identifying, investigating, pursuing third-party claims and coordinating with other jurisdictions or insurers
- Lead defended liability and indemnity claims, preparing pleadings, strategy, evidence, expert reports, settlement negotiations and trials if required
- Engage with a broad spectrum of stakeholders: insurers, brokers, adjusters, experts, other law firms, regulatory bodies, and clients themselves
- Supervise junior lawyers and support staff; delegate tasks, provide coaching and feedback
- Ensure that work is delivered on time, on budget, and to high quality standards
- Contribute to business development activities: proposals, client meetings, technical updates, thought leadership
- Qualified solicitor (England & Wales) with 3-4 years PQE in insurance contentious work, specifically Property & Liability claims
- Significant experience handling complex first-party property claims, including business interruption, major property damage, flood/fire losses etc.
- Strong track record advising on coverage issues and policy wording, with ability to interpret, defend or challenge coverage in complex factual situations
- Experience of subrogation: identifying recovery prospects, drafting claims, negotiating settlement or prosecuting recovery claims
- Experience of defended liability and indemnity claims: drafting pleadings, leading strategy, managing disclosure, experts, litigation or arbitration as required
- Excellent legal analysis and writing skills; attention to detail; ability to present arguments clearly in both written and oral form
- Strong stakeholder management, negotiation skills and commercial awareness
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple cases under pressure
- Comfortable supervising junior team members, helping with their development
