Job overview

We are seeking a paediatric registered nurse (band
6) with experience or interest in long‑term conditions to join the children's epilepsy team. The post is a 37.5‑hour post based at Longsight Health Centre and Charlestown Health Centre, but flexible working can be discussed  role involves delivering high‑quality health care, education and support to children and families within the home, school and various community settings.

Key responsibilities include assessing and delivering care, developing programmes of care for children and young people with confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy, supporting the team leader and Advanced Clinical Practitioner, and acting in the absence of the team leader to maintain agreed policies and clinical standards.

Applicants should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, sound theoretical evidence‑based knowledge, and the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The role involves lone working; robust safeguarding policies are in place. A full driving licence and access to a car are required.

Main duties and responsibilities
  • Support the team leader and Advanced Clinical Practitioner in the management of a caseload and the assessment and delivery of care needs.
  • Act in the absence of the team leader/caseload holder to maintain agreed policies and clinical standards.
  • Assist in the development and management of a designated area of practice in conjunction with the team leader.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of epilepsy care in accordance with the Trust’s agreed clinical standards.
  • Provide education and information to the child/young person and their families/carers around epilepsy‑related issues including individualised management plans, safety, lifestyle choices, education and social impacts.
  • Promote clinical excellence through the principles of the Trust’s philosophy.
  • Support the team leader in ensuring compliance of quality assurance initiatives.
  • Identify the health needs of the child and young person nursed in the community and work in close liaison with other health care and multi‑agency workers to adopt a multi‑disciplinary approach to health care.
  • Work closely with hospital colleagues to create seamless care.
  • Develop the role of the Children’s Epilepsy Nurse Specialist in accordance with the needs of the client group, the service and the NMC.
  • Be responsible for a defined area of practice as agreed by the team leader/manager.
Qualifications
  • Registered Sick Children’s Nurse
  • Teaching and assessing experience
  • Relevant degree level education / specialist practitioner CCN
  • NMC registered Nurse Independent Prescriber
  • Leadership / management qualification
Knowledge
  • Experience working with children and young people with long‑term conditions
  • Understanding and application of family‑centred care
  • Community experience
  • Specialist interest / knowledge in childhood epilepsies
  • Experience managing complex safeguarding issues
Training and experience
  • Minimum of 3 years post registration
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Experience of research/audit
