The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students; to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role. We are working with the Liberian government to quantify the blue carbon stored in mangroves from estuaries across Liberia. We have the mangrove sediment samples and need to process them for carbon analysis. This position will involve a range of laboratory duties, as well as data management, to support this project.
The research assistants will be responsible for laboratory work preparing sediment samples for elemental C&N analysis (grinding, sieving, weighing). The role requires careful and methodical work as the data will be used in a scientific publication and will be presented to the Liberian government for them to use in development of policies for mangroves and carbon in Liberia.
Dates: ASAP for up to 8 weeks (we have a set funding amount, so the length is dependent on the number of hours worked). Hours of Work: up to 16 hours per week (flexible). Details of briefing/training:

Person Specification:
This role is only open to current Manchester Met Students who meet the following requirements – The successful candidates will be second or final year undergraduate or postgraduate students from the Department of Natural Sciences, with relevant knowledge and laboratory experience.

- Knowledge in restoration of coastal habitats as nature-based solutions and natural climate solutions.
- Skills and experience in geochemistry laboratory analysis including preparing samples for elemental analysis.
- Attention to detail and record keeping. This is an important project for an external organisation and careful, methodological work is required.
- Data handling skills.
- Time management skills – the work of the post will be varied and so time management and organisational skills will be important to prioritise and complete tasks.
