Occupational Therapist
Job SummaryBe part of a proactive multidisciplinary and professional team who put excellent patient care as their priority. Offer holistic needs assessment, provide individually planned care informed by patient wishes, and support patients and families to have open and honest conversations about end‑of‑life care.
Job Responsibilities- Use evidence‑based knowledge and advanced clinical reasoning to undertake highly complex clinical assessments in nursing homes, hospitals, or patients’ own homes, identifying needs, treatment aims, and goals in collaboration with the individual patient and the multidisciplinary team.
- Assess and treat in‑patients, out‑patients, and those attending outreach clinics, including advanced skills in wheelchair adjustment, therapeutic handling/hoisting, and discharge planning.
- Use specialist skills to engage patients with challenging behaviour or psychological/psychiatric needs in purposeful treatment programmes, in collaboration with the MDT, to ensure holistic care.
- Determine patients’ level of understanding of the treatment plan to ensure valid consent and work within the legal framework with patients who lack capacity.
- Use recognised outcome measures and goal‑setting measures to motivate challenging clients.
- Apply advanced specialist assessment and analytical skills to interpret and analyse clinical and non‑clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses and prognoses in complex conditions.

The Occupational Therapist is to support Pilgrims Hospice patients to achieve maximum independent function and help them retain that independence for as long as possible while under Pilgrims care.
Person Specification QualificationsEssential
- DipCOT / Degree in Occupational Therapy
- Member of COT or recognised equivalent
- Registered with HPC
- Evidence of relevant CPD
- Full clean driving licence
Desirable
- First line Management / Leadership Course
- MSc or equivalent
- Clinical supervisors course
- Member of relevant special interest group
Essential
- Post‑qualification experience as an occupational therapist
- Relevant clinical experience to the post, preferably including experience of Palliative Care
- Experience working in MDT
Desirable
- Teaching experience
- Experience supervising staff and students
- Experience in clinical audit and outcome measures
Essential
- Good written and spoken English
- Able to communicate with variety of people, occasionally in emotional distress
- Good organisation of self and time
- Basic skills in therapeutic patient handling & discharge planning
- Advanced OT skills relevant to work area
- Able to demonstrate clinical leadership skills
- Detailed knowledge of biomechanical and/or neurological treatment approaches
- Up‑to‑date knowledge of adaptive equipment
Desirable
- Good presentation skills
- Working knowledge of research methodologies
Up‑to‑date knowledge of specialist equipment relevant to the post
