FTTx Design Specialist
Reporting to the FTTx Design Manager, the FTTx Design Specialist will be responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing the implementation of fiber optic networks in residential areas. This role involves collaborating with project managers, field technicians, external contractors, and local authorities to ensure the successful deployment of FTTx infrastructure. In this highly dynamic position you will have the opportunity to learn and grow within the organization.
Responsibilities& Key Duties Network Design and Planning
- Design FTTx networks, including fiber routes, distribution, and drop points.
- Create detailed network design maps using GIS and CAD software.
- Conduct site surveys to assess feasibility and gather necessary data for design.
- Prepare comprehensive design documentation, including schematics, fiber allocation plans, and bill of materials.
- Maintain accurate records of network designs, modifications, and as‑built documentation.
- Generate progress reports and project status updates for management and stakeholders.
- Work closely with project managers to develop project timelines and resource requirements.
- Coordinate with field technicians and contractors to ensure designs are accurately implemented.
- Liaise with local authorities and utility companies to obtain necessary permits and clearances.
- Ensure designs comply with industry standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct quality checks and site inspections to verify the accuracy of installations.
- Address and resolve any design‑related issues that arise during the deployment process.
- Provide technical support and guidance to field technicians and other team members.
- Conduct training sessions on FTTx design principles and best practices.
- Travel may be required to various project locations.
- Flexible working hours may be needed to meet project deadlines.
- Office‑based with occasional site visits.
- Proficiency with computers and software, including MS Office (Word, Teams, Excel).
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to telecommunications and fiber optic networks.
- Familiarity with network design software (e.g., OSPInsight, Bentley).
- 3+ years of FTTH/x design experience.
- 3+ years of experience with GIS and AutoCAD.
- Minimum of 3–5 years in FTTx network design and deployment.
- Proficiency in GIS and CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, ArcGIS).
- Strong understanding of fiber optic technology and telecommunications infrastructure.
- Understanding of utility and telecommunications planning, design, and permitting.
- Experience with project management tools and methodologies.
- Post‑secondary education in Geographic Information Systems (asset).
- Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Certification in FTTx design (e.g., FTTx Council Certified).
