The Opportunity
Aviva Canada Inc. has an excellent opportunity in our Small Medium and Enterprise (SME) commercial insurance business unit. Our Ontario Small Business branch is seeking a Commercial Lines Auto Underwriters in Junior and Intermediate roles. In this position, you will service a substantial portfolio of commercial auto business requiring a demonstrated underwriting ability and a commitment to customer service excellence. You will be involved in the underwriting of small business Individually Rated Commercial Auto (IRCA) accounts.
👉 We welcome applicants with anywhere from 1 to 5 years of insurance and/or underwriting experience. We will determine level based on experience.
What you’ll do
· Assess and evaluate risk for new and existing business (IRCA)
· Assist more junior underwriters with applying corporate underwriting standards and share knowledge and skills with others in the branch (Intermediate); share knowledge and skills with others in the branch (Junior)
· Analyze reports to determine adequate exposure and loss rating
· Maintain awareness of market trends, pricing levels and policy form amendments
· Negotiate renewal terms for the retention of business
· Utilize loss control and risk management practices in the underwriting process.
· Respond to inquiries from brokers regarding modification to policy files in a prompt and efficient manner.
· Work with brokers to develop new business.
· Develop and maintain excellent broker relationships and management of assigned broker portfolio
· Provide above average customer service
What you’ll bring
For Junior Candidates:
· 1–3 years of experience in the insurance industry; exposure to commercial auto underwriting is an asset.
· Foundational underwriting skills and a strong appetite for learning and growth.
· CIP designation in progress or completed (preferred).
For Intermediate Candidates:
· 3–5 years of commercial auto underwriting experience, including IRCA.
· Demonstrated technical capability to independently manage a portfolio.
· Ability to provide guidance to junior underwriters.
For Both Levels:
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Strong organizational and administrative skills.
· Highly motivated, enthusiastic, and adaptable.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
· Strong computer skills.
· Ability to meet deadlines and perform effectively under pressure.
· Knowledge of RTM is an asset.
What you’ll get
The salary band for this position ranges from $50,000 to $65,000 for a junior position and from $65,000 to $80,000 for an intermediate. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
