In-House Legal Counsel
Job description
Our client is a leading international mid-size bank located in Canada and is looking for a highly motivated and experienced legal counsel to join their team in Markham. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing legal advice and support to the bank, with a focus on compliance matters. The role requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a law firm or corporate-commercial banking environment.
Your new role
In this new role, you will report to the Chief Compliance Officer, CAMLO, head of the Legal Department. You will be tasked with:
Reviewing contracts and agreements, including providing legal advice on legal and regulatory matters.
Managing external counsel relationships.
Supporting the CCO with all legal and litigation matters.
Maintaining a strong understanding of relevant legal and regulatory requirements, including the Bank Act, privacy laws, FCAC regulations, b10, b20, E-13, RCM guidelines.
Supporting capital markets, securities, and advisory opportunities.
Assisting with the development of policies and compliance matters.
Providing training to staff on legal and compliance matters.
Working closely with other departments to ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
Representing the Legal Department on special projects, new product proposals, and risk management initiatives, vendor contracts.
Drafting, reviewing, and being familiar with applicable terms of use and drafting changes to such documentation and procedures when required.
Advising on, drafting, and negotiating agreements with business clients.
Assessing legal and reputational risk of new initiatives or changes to existing products and services.
What you will need to succeed
To be selected, you will require strong professional and academic credentials. You have a law degree from an accredited law school and are qualified to practice law in Canada. You have 2 years of experience practicing law. You have superior analytical and communication skills both in legal and business settings. You have the ability to work independently on multiple files and prioritize them effectively while meeting deadlines.

You should be familiar and stay current with, as well as comment on, the legislation and regulations governing these products and advise relevant business units accordingly.
