The Registered Practical Nurse provides professional nursing care to residents in accordance with required medical care and professional nursing practice. They provide direction to Personal Support Workers as defined by the College of Nurses Standard of Practice, working with Unregulated Health Care Workers.

• Implement Age Care policies and procedures on the unit, collaborating with the Registered Nurse. Provide input into the revision of procedures within the residence and the unit.
• Liaise with physicians and other members of the healthcare team, including external partners. Notify the physician immediately of any significant changes in resident status in the absence of the RN.
• Work with team members to ensure residents’ care needs are met.
• Provide direction to Personal Support Workers on the care team.
• Participate in shift reports, ensuring all team members are informed of changes in resident status.

• Knowledge of geriatric, rehabilitation, or long-term care nursing, including activation, nursing, and personnel administration.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Fixing Long-Term Care Act and Regulations, Health Disciplines Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Pharmacy Act, Food and Drugs Act (Canada), Controlled Substances Act (Canada), and others.
• A current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario and good standing membership.
