GP Assistant - Waterloo House Surgery, Millom
Job Summary:
Cumbria Health are looking for a proactive and organised GP Assistant to help ensure the smooth running of our clinics. You will support our GPs by taking on a range of routine administrative and clinical tasks, freeing up their time to focus on delivering excellent patient care. 24 hours per week. Closing Date: 06 January 2025.
- Sorting clinical post and prioritising for the GP, signposting relevant post to others such as clinical pharmacist.
- Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes.
- Dealing with all routine clinical post directly e.g. DNA letters, 2WW, etc.
- Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow‑up appointments for patients.
- Completing basic (non‑opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign (e.g. insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms).
- Processing and following up referrals as required.
- Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies.
- Support the GP with care home round administration.
- Support the GP with accurate summarisation of medical records.
- Work alongside wider practice and PCN teams to ensure a joined‑up approach and communication.
- Completing simple clinical observations / investigations directed locally (dipstick urine, blood pressure, ECG, phlebotomy).
- Supporting the GP with immunisations and wound care.
- Preparing patients before GP appointments, taking a brief history and basic readings.
- In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with sensitive information. Staff must respect their privacy and act appropriately.
- Post‑holders may have access to confidential information relating to patients, carers, staff, and business. All such information is strictly confidential.
- Information may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with Practice policies and procedures.
- Use personal security systems as per Practice guidelines.
- Identify risks involved in work activities and manage them.
- Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain tidy, safe work areas.
- Report potential risks identified.
- Act in a way that recognises the importance of patients’ rights, interprets them consistently with Practice procedures, and current legislation.
- Respect the privacy, dignity, needs, and beliefs of patients, carers, and colleagues.
- Behave in a welcoming, non‑judgemental manner and respect individual circumstances.
- Participate in annual performance reviews and record personal/professional development.
- Complete all Blue Stream training identified as relevant to the role.
- Take responsibility for own development, learning, and performance.
- Track and record evidence of experience against the national competency framework.
- Alert team members to quality and risk issues.
- Assess own performance and take accountability for actions.
- Contribute to team effectiveness through reflection and suggestion of improvements.
- Work effectively with other agencies to meet patient needs.
- Manage own time, workload, and resources effectively.
- Communicate effectively with team members, patients, and carers.
- Recognise needs for alternative communication methods and respond accordingly.
- Work effectively with other agencies to meet patient needs.
- Apply Practice policies, standards, and guidance.
- Discuss with team members how policies and guidelines affect own work.
- Participate in audits where appropriate.
- English & Maths GCSE (or equivalent).
- Previous experience working as part of a team.
- Previous experience in Primary Care or similar NHS setting.
- Capable of carrying out clinical, technical, scientific or administrative duties according to established protocols.
- Ability to provide quality patient care.
- Excellent IT skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good organisational and team‑working skills.
- Willing to work towards GPA certification within a set timeframe.
- Understanding and adherence to strict confidentiality.
