AboutThe Role
Automation Operator primarily responsible for operating automation equipment for special events, performances, and general maintenance of the automation systems. Reporting to the Production Stage Manager, the role includes safe setup, use, troubleshooting, and maintenance of equipment used by cast and crew within the venue, participating in all set ups/strikes, rehearsals, special events, running show tracks, including Deck, Sound, and Lighting as needed.
ExpectedResponsibilities
- Maintain and operate automation systems, including TAIT systems where applicable.
- Ensure safe setup, use and maintenance of all rigging, aerial, and automation equipment.
- Operate rigging and aerial equipment during performances and rehearsals, including operating automation consoles, assisting performers into harnesses, connecting harnesses to rigging points, and performing spotting duties.
- Complete daily inspections and pre-checks of all rigging and flying equipment.
- Apply basic knowledge in audio playback and mixing, operating a spotlight, and basic stage deck crew experience.
- Conduct safety inspections and maintenance of automation, rigging, and aerial gear.
- Communicate professionally with the Production Stage Manager, cast, technicians, and maintenance teams.
- Troubleshoot and report issues with technical equipment.
- Perform pre- and post-show duties, ensuring all equipment and scenic elements are securely stored.
- Assist with special events, trainings, and production-related duties as required.
- Complete inventories and equipment maintenance, following RWS and Venue Management reporting procedures.
- Keep knowledge of other RWS Technicians’ show tracks and duties.
- Play an active role in cast and technician changeovers and installations of new programming. Work hours may increase during these periods while adhering to ILO and Maritime law.
- Valid passport not expiring within 6 months past the length of contract.
- Ability to obtain required visas based on itinerary.
- Complete required pre-employment medical screening, including comprehensive vaccination requirements.li>
- Proof of COVID‑19 vaccination or exemption, including one booster shot.
- Bachelor’s degree in theatre production, technical theatre, or equivalent field experience.
- Excellent communication, time‑management skills, work ethic, and attitude.
- Fluent in spoken and written English; knowledge of additional languages is a plus.
- Working knowledge of sound, lighting, and video technical equipment.
- Ability to assess technical support needs for events and performances.
- Experience with cruise line or touring is suggested, not required.
- Able to work professionally under high‑stress, tight‑deadline conditions.
- Communicate across multiple departments onboard and understand larger operational context.
- Willingness to assist beyond direct scope and learn new skills for team benefit.
- Think on feet and respond quickly when needed.
- Work seven days per week for periods up to 6‑8 months at a time.
- Comfortable working in multiple venues and across multiple tracks.
- Compatible with living in close quarters with diverse coworkers.
- Work at height in harnesses, Genies, and ladders; stand long periods; lift 50 lbs (25 kg) consistently.
- Adhere to onboard safety regulations and Ship’s Safety Management System.
- Onboard handover and training with previous Automation Operator.
