Who we are and what we do

North Star Earth & Space uses multiple sensor data source as the building blocks to create information services tailored to the needs and requirements of clients from both government and industry. Our extensive development portfolio includes orbital dynamics and machine learning algorithms for a variety of applications for space domain awareness (SDA) and space traffic management (STM). With headquarters in Montreal, Canada, European headquarters in Luxembourg and a wholly owned subsidiary in McLean, Virginia, the company is solving the ever-increasing threat of space collisions and empowering humanity to preserve our planet.

We are seeking a highly motivated Aerospace Engineer, Mission Planner or Space Systems Architect with strong software development experience to join our growing technical team. In this role, you will design, automate, and validate mission planning and space system constellation analysis workflows that enable high-performance space operations. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure integration across mission planning, tasking, orbital dynamics, and backend systems.

This position is ideal for an engineer who is passionate about, astrodynamics, automation, data analysis, and system performance.

What you will do Space System Automation & Simulation

Focus on algorithms, models, workflows, propagation, and scenario validation to implement a next generation SSA mission planning engine.

  • Collaborate with Mission Planners to design and implement automated workflows including calculation of access windows, visibility periods, pointing geometry, and resulting overlay with onto space system constraints.
  • Integrate mission planning workflows with internal and external systems via APIs for tasking and data exchange.
  • Build unit, integration, and regression tests for mission planning and simulation pipelines.
  • Validate scenarios against expected orbital geometry, constraints, and mission objectives.
  • Integrate simulation tools and scenario runners into the monitored aggregate operational framework, enabling automated comparison between planned and achieved outcomes.
System Performance, Data Validation & Reporting

Extend North Star’s SSA operational picture with operational monitoring, telemetry and validation tools and dashboards.

  • Define and report performance metrics to support operations.
  • Connect mission-planning engine to backend services to report on data acquisition results against planned access windows, pointing geometry, and mission constraints.
  • Identify anomalies, missed opportunities, and degraded acquisitions.
  • Generate dashboards and reports summarizing data quality, coverage, and performance trends to inform operations and future planning.
  • Integrate mission-planning requests and outcomes directly into the operational monitoring framework, ensuring that tasking decisions, constraints, and execution results are automatically captured, evaluated, and visualized.
Team Collaboration
  • Participate in design reviews and technical discussions to align development activities with project goals.
  • Share insights, solutions, and best practices to elevate team performance and advance mission capabilities.
What you bring to the table
  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with astrodynamics data and space systems, experience with scientific/analytical libraries such as Num Py, Sci Py, Pandas)
  • Experience developing microservices or data-processing pipelines is considered a strong asset
  • Experience with languages such as C++, Rust, or Java considered an asset
  • This is a multi-disciplinary role requiring a strong willingness to learn.
Preferred
  • Direct experience with astrodynamics and mission planning tools, such as:
  • STK, GMAT, Orekit, Astropy, SGP4 propagation libraries, or similar.
  • Experience with orbital mechanics, constellation planning, or spacecraft operations.
  • Experience integrating multiple systems or data pipelines in operational environments.
  • Familiarity with modern backend technologies and cloud platforms.
