Communications and Marketing Officer

Location: County Hall, Morpeth

Working arrangements: Hybrid working (weekly office attendance expected). Driving licence essential.

Help shape the way we communicate with 320,000+ people across Northumberland.

We're looking for an experienced communications and marketing officer to join our award‑winning team to work across press, social media, web and marketing campaigns.

Join a creative, high‑impact team

You’ll help deliver campaigns that matter to local people – from launching major infrastructure projects to recruiting Foster Carers or tackling anti‑social behaviour. You’ll work closely with councillors, directors, frontline services, emergency services and partners to get the message right.

Every day is different. You could be:

  • Arranging interviews with local or national media.
  • Writing social media, press or web content.
  • Planning a marketing campaign.
  • Filming and editing video.

This is a hands‑on role where you’ll need creativity, sound judgement and strong writing skills.

What you’ll do
  • Plan and deliver on internal/external communications and marketing campaigns that support council priorities.
  • Write clear, user‑centred content for social media, website, newsletters and press.
  • Work with local, regional and national media to secure coverage and build strong relationships.
  • Create short‑form video, graphics and photography using tools such as Canva, Photoshop and Premiere.
  • Support emergency and urgent communications, including being on‑call.
  • Monitor results and improve how we work, based on data and feedback.
  • Support colleagues with clear effective messaging – including during fast‑paced, urgent or emergency situations.
What we’re looking for
  • Excellent user‑centred writing skills.
  • Experience working with press or media outlets.
  • Ability to lead on projects, manage competing deadlines and stay calm under pressure.
  • Experience working with senior leaders or in high‑profile settings.
  • A collaborative team player who is always looking to improve.
  • Understanding of local government or the ability to learn quickly.
  • Experience of out‑of‑hours or on‑call press work is helpful but not essential.
Why you’ll enjoy working with us

You’ll be part of a supportive, creative team that focuses on impact. You’ll have the space to try new ideas, develop your skills and help shape how we communicate with residents across Northumberland.

You’ll have the chance to work on meaningful projects that make a real difference to people across the county.
