Diabetes Nurse Leader – Island Health

The Diabetes Nurse Leader provides clinical and managerial leadership in Diabetes Education Centres to deliver comprehensive diabetes care to inpatients and outpatients, supervising staff, coordinating education activities, and driving quality improvement initiatives.

Job Responsibilities
  • Oversees day‑to‑day operations of Diabetes Education Centres, supervising clerical staff and coordinating team work activities.
  • Provides patient assessment and education in group and individual settings, and serves as a clinical resource nurse by consulting physicians and other health‑care teams on diabetes care.
  • Leads practice initiatives, supports quality improvement activities, and helps establish and maintain departmental goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Travels to various Island Health sites as required, ensuring transportation arrangements meet operational requirements.
Qualifications
  • Registered RN in BC and current Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) certification.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent experience caring for patients with diabetes, including group teaching experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current theories, technologies, and practices in diabetes management.
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, families, medical team, staff, and outside agencies.
  • Ability to manage competing demands in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to function in multiple roles (education, program support, development).
  • Ability to plan and implement major initiatives with organizational impact.
  • Ability to supervise, organize, prioritize, and problem‑solve.
  • Effective conflict resolution and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Critical thinking, creative problem‑solving, and commitment to collaborative practice and lifelong learning.
  • Ability to perform physical duties of the position.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
