We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join our well‑integrated team at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Job SummaryThe role supports the uveitis service, the tertiary referral centre in the Northeast. The appointment is proleptic, as the current lead specialist will retire. Clinical trials participation is encouraged.
Main duties of the job- Develop and deliver the uveitis service.
- Attend specialist uveitis clinics and other subspecialty clinics if desired.
- Provide clinical expertise, including retinal laser, intravitreal injections and steroid implants.
- Manage complex uveitis cases in close collaboration with rheumatology and other specialties.
- Participate in the ophthalmology consultant on‑call rota (1:21 on‑call commitment).
- Support audit, research and teaching activities.
We are a flexible, patient‑focused NHS foundation trust. Our staff cover over 6,500 patient contacts daily across multiple sites, including Freeman Hospital, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle Westgate Cataract Centre and community sites.
Job DescriptionProvide clinical expertise in line with the agreed job plan, including specialist uveitis clinics, triage referrals, and responsibility for patients on the eye emergency department rota. Liaison with the wider department and internal/external referrals is required. Keep up‑to‑date with ophthalmic practice and abide by GMC good medical practice guidelines.
Person Specification – Essential- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC Registration.
- FRCOphth or equivalent.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register within 6 months of AAC.
- Higher degree.
- Uveitis fellowship or other specialist training fellowship.
- Experience in NHS and medical ophthalmology training.
- Knowledge of electronic medical records.
- Extensive experience in general ophthalmology and uveitis subspecialty.
- Proficiency in retinal laser, intravitreal injections and steroid implants.
- Evidence of commitment to uveitis specialty and independent clinical responsibility.
- Ability to use an electronic medical record.
- Experience with management, project leadership and clinical governance.
- Ability to work under pressure and organise consultant workload.
- Proven management and administrative experience.
- Experience implementing change and developing new technologies.
- Experience supervising junior medical staff.
- Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Ability to teach clinical and technical skills.
- Completed courses to develop teaching skills.
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
- Experience training non‑medical practitioners.
- Involvement in research methodology and publication of findings.
- Higher degree.
- Publications in the last five years.
- Participation in audit.
- Evidence of practice change from audit.
- Evidence of audit review for improvement.
- Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum.
