An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our busy and dynamic Echo Team at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking to recruit a fully accredited BSE Cardiac Physiologist at Band 7 or a Band 6 with recent exposure to Echo, working towards BSE accreditation.

This post would suit an individual looking to enhance their knowledge and develop specialist echo cardiographic skills. Our internationally renowned Cardiothoracic Directorate provides secondary and tertiary Cardiac and transplantation services to the North of England and beyond. The successful applicant will therefore be working at the cutting edge of echocardiography within this setting. Our Echo Department is BSE accredited and has a strong emphasis on individual professional development through participation in weekly echo meetings reviewing interesting and challenging cases and attendance at monthly educational meetings.

This is a Trustwide post therefore the post holder will be required to work across both of our sites (Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital), although a base will be agreed on appointment.

This post holder should be a BSE accredited cardiac physiologist, independently scanning and reporting or a Band 6 Cardiac Physiologist due to complete BSE accreditation. The successful applicant would be expected to perform a range of highly complex diagnostic echocardiograms such as complex inherited cardiomyopathies, oncology patients, stroke, high risk patients (intensive care setting) on adults with a broad spectrum of pathology.

The department has physiology lead valve clinics along with assisting in transesophageal echocardiography and stress echocardiology and the post holder is expected to participate in these services.

The successful applicant will be expected to assist in the training of junior staff along with medical staff with an interest in Echocardiography.

Job responsibilities

Band 6

  • Participate in the delivery of a specialist clinical service and deliver a high standard of care to all patients.
  • Participate in the on-call rota, providing a 24-hour emergency service for cardiac catheterisation labs and pacing /ICD problems for adult and paediatric patients.
  • Rotate through sections of Cardiac Services department to build and maintain a body of specialist knowledge and apply this to practice.
  • Continue theoretical and practical training via experiential learning and designated advanced course attendances in order to further develop a specialist area of practice.
  • Contribute to the delivery of training within the department.

Band 7

  • Specialist in acquiring, interpreting and reporting ultrasound images.
  • To provide a broad range of specialist cardiac ultrasound investigations (including standard transthoracic, stress, contrast, CRT assessment and optimization and assistance in transoesophageal studies) as an autonomous practitioner on a day-to-day basis that are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • To train a wide variety of staff groups in the specialist techniques of diagnostic cardiac ultrasound.
  • To be flexible in working within other areas as appropriate, when service needs demand.
  • Contribute to the delivery of training within the department.
