The Role

The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics (MSP) at Newcastle University seeks a fixed‑term Research Assistant/Associate in extragalactic astrophysics for a UKRI‑funded project managed by Dr Chris Harrison. The post is hosted at Newcastle and involves close collaboration with Durham University, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE). Work will focus on spectroscopic surveys (4

MOST, MOONS) and related data analysis, with opportunities to pursue independent research, training and outreach activities.

Key Accountabilities
  • Conduct data analysis and research as per the project programme.
  • Work successfully within research teams and wider collaborators to publish world‑leading research.
  • Present research outputs to scientific and non‑scientific audiences, in written and oral form.
  • Contribute to the culture and strengths of the research group and the School, including supervision of students, outreach, EDI initiatives and research events.
  • Perform any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post.
The Person (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Excellent technical skills in analysing and interpreting spectroscopic datasets related to extragalactic observations.
  • Strong knowledge of extragalactic astrophysics, ideally galaxy evolution and AGN.
  • Track record of high‑quality research outputs relevant to the project (publications, software, tools).
  • Excellent communication skills for publications and concise communications.
  • Track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia or meetings.
  • Desirable: experience planning large spectroscopic surveys, multi‑wavelength datasets, AGN feedback models, proposal development, outreach activity.

Qualifications
  • PhD awarded in a relevant discipline (Associate level).
  • Honours degree and working towards a PhD with demonstrable professional experience (Assistant level).
